DALLAS, TX (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Did you know that the potato chip, fire extinguisher and lunar surface ultraviolet camera were all invented by African Americans? These facts and more can be found in Author John Cothran’s newly published book, “A Search of African American Life, Achievement and Culture” (ISBN: 0963400207 / 0963400215).

The book, which started out as a game, is virtually an encyclopedia of black history that was sparked by Cothran while a student at The University of Memphis in the 1960s. He was researching the history of African Americans for a course and found very little information.

“The book fills a place where there was a void,” Lisa Haliburton, librarian at the Carrollton Public Library in Carrollton, TX, said.

Haliburton was among one of the many people who helped Cothran find books for his research. Cothran searched for facts high and low, near and far – across the United States.

“It’s been an eye-opening experience,” Cothran said of the research. “I learned to appreciate a lot just by thinking about some of the things people went through.”

The question and answer format of the book is a takeoff of the “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQs). Comprised of 10 base chapters and two for children and adolescents, the 12 chapters are chronologically organized; a bibliography and index are also included.

The reference contains over 400 images and 1800 facts and the format allows the book to be used in games and easily integrated into teaching. Areas covered include: art, business and professional associations, education, entertainment, geography, history and civil right, literature, military history, science, and sports.

“The book is highly informative, precise, and well researched,” Norm Goldman, Editor of BookPleasures, said. “It is ideal for sharing with children and adults alike.”

Cothran, a graduate of the University of Memphis and a respected collector of African American memorabilia lives in Carrollton, TX with his wife and two sons – his avocation is the study of African American culture. He has worked for a Fortune 500 company for over 25 years.

The book can be ordered through Biblio Distribution at 1-800-462-6420, at and soon through major book retailers.
