FAIRMONT, W.Va., Sept. 10, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Backbone Security announced today that Axxera has integrated their Steganography Analyzer Real-Time Scanner into Central Intelligence Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) platform. This integration brings together two leading technologies for monitoring insider use of digital steganography to exfiltrate sensitive information from the enterprise network.
Through this partnership, Axxera’s customers now have access to the world’s only network security appliance capable of detecting insiders downloading and using steganography applications in real time. This solution can be combined with other security tools and efficiently managed by Axxera’s Central Intelligence. Central Intelligence offers advanced event correlation and an integrated ticketing system built on the ITIL framework helps reduce the time required to identify and mitigate the advanced attacks frequently seen in current global cyber environment.
Digital steganography is an Internet era version of an information hiding technique dating back to the days of Ancient Greece. Using digital steganography, a file can be embedded within, or appended to, another file in such a way that it cannot be seen or heard. Unlike cryptography, which translates information into an unintelligible sequence of letters and numbers, steganography conceals the very existence of the information.
Insiders are increasingly becoming aware of the value of information they work with on a daily basis. Accordingly, insider theft of sensitive information is increasing at an alarming pace. Insiders can use any of the large number of steganography applications available on the Internet as freeware or shareware to ex-filtrate personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), intellectual property, trade secrets, or any other sensitive information, for example, outside the enterprise network. This nefarious insider activity will not be detected because the current generation of network security appliances does not detect insider use of steganography.
StegAlyzerRTS version 3.3, developed in Backbone’s Steganography Analysis and Research Center (SARC), is a network security sensor that detects insiders downloading any of the 1,100+ applications currently in the SARC’s archive of steganography applications.
Detecting insiders downloading a steganography application is an early warning indicator there is a high probability the insider is planning to use the steganography application to steal sensitive information.
Using the analytical approach to detecting steganography developed in the SARC, StegAlyzerRTS can also detect insider use of a subset of the 1,100+ applications through a unique signature-based detection model.
Version 3.3 features numerous changes designed to increase the performance, stability, and reliability of the appliance when monitoring very high throughput networks. Most importantly, this version features improved archive/compressed file processing performance that significantly improves the capability to rapidly analyze HTTP traffic.
“It’s challenging enough to defend against outsider threats to a company’s intellectual property and other sensitive data,” said Bart G. Guerreri, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Backbone Security. “However, it’s even harder to defend against the insider with legitimate access that could cause the most damage. Our state-of-the-art real-time steganography detection appliance was specifically designed to counter the emerging threat of insiders using steganography to steal the crown jewels.”
“Although some of our larger customers have comprehensive security services in place, other customers have specifically requested steganography detection services from us. The integration of Backbone’s industry leading real-time steganography detection capability with Axxera’s Central Intelligence SIEM provides a seamless solution for our customers, giving them complete visibility into this emerging insider threat,” said Reddy Marri, CEO of Axxera.
StegAlyzerRTS version 4.0, currently under development for release in Q1 2013 will provide the capability to manage multiple geographically dispersed StegAlyzerRTS appliances from one location. This feature will be of particular interest to large domestic or international enterprises with multiple data centers around the world.
StegAlyzerRTS is available for both 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps networks. For more information please visit www.sarc-wv.com or send email to sarc@backbonesecurity.com.
