Michigan’s Minimum Wage Will Be $6.95 Effective October, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CA – May 2 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — LaborLawCenter, Inc. (www.laborlawcenter.com) is notifying Michigan employers of the changes affecting the mandatory posting requirements (29 CFR 1903.2 (a) (1)), since the new minimum wage increase has been passed. With Michigan’s new minimum wage going into effect, many employers will be out of compliance. Previous Michigan minimum wage posters, stating the minimum wage of $5.15, will now be out of date and no longer compliant putting many Michigan businesses at risk of potential fines. (29 CFR USC Sec. 2006)
Bill 318, regarding Michigan State’s new minimum wage, was recently signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm. The bill states that beginning October 1, 2006 the mandatory state minimum wage will increase from $5.15 per hour to $6.95 per hour. Over the next two years the wage is set to increase to $7.40 per hour. This is the first raise in the minimum wage for Michigan State since 1997. Posting the new Michigan labor law poster or updating the previous Michigan’s minimum wage notice of $5.15 is strongly advised. (Michigan Wage Law of 1964 Act 154 of 1964 Section 408.391)
The wage increase is the latest effort to boost Michigan’s economy. Lawmakers were initially skeptical as to whether the business owners would find the increase as a burden and trim down on personnel or cease the hiring of new employees completely. Yet, according to recent polls, over 80 % of Michigan voters support the new minimum wage increase.
