The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is located at 34th and Clement, Lincoln Park San Francisco, CA 94121. http://www.thinker.org/legion. Maintenance of the organ and the recital series are supported by the Bradley Trust.

The program opens with Edward Elgar’s “POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE, OPUS 39” transcribed for organ by Edwin H. Lemare; the ever popular “CANON IN D-MAJOR” by Johann Pachelbel, Two Summertime Pieces, “MY HEART ABOUNDS WITH PLEASURE IN THIS FAIR SUMMERTIME” by Johannes Brahms and “SUMMERTIME” from Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin.

Keith continues with selections from the produced for television musical, “Cinderella” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein: “STEP-SISTER’S LAMENT,” “A LOVELY NIGHT,” “DO I LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL?,” “IN MY OWN LITTLE CORNER” AND “TEN MINUTES AGO.” Composed in 1957, Rodgers’ score still elicits comments such as “graceful and exceptionally beautiful.”

To celebrate the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, Keith Thompson concludes with the stirring “CONCERT VARIATIONS ON THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER” by Dudley Buck. Buck (1839 – 1909) was one of the most important organists in American music in the last half of the 19th century. The piece was written before the Star Spangled Banner became our National Anthem. Of the theme and five variations, always a highlight is the third variation which is played allegro non troppo (“fast but not too fast”) as a pedal solo.

Keith Thompson’s recordings are available on Apple iTunes(tm) web stores and on CD with other American pipe organ music and extensive program notes through www.echoesofheaven.com.
