A noted expert and frequent speaker on matters of financial planning and retirement income, Hopkins is also a distinguished professor who has educated thousands of financial services professionals over the course of his career.
In 2015, Investment News named Hopkins one of its top 40 financial services professionals under 40. He has contributed expert commentary on the strategic use of home equity in retirement income planning to such outlets as Forbes, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and was the keynote speaker at ReverseVision’s User Conference in January 2016.

Hopkins is associate professor of taxation and co-director of the New York Life Center for Retirement Income at The American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He also holds the Larry R. Pike Chair in Insurance and Investments at The College, where he teaches courses in retirement, estate planning and life insurance. Hopkins’ law review articles have been published by the American and Pennsylvania Bar Associations and appear in such periodicals as Villanova Law Review, Nebraska Law Review and Hastings Science & Technology Law Journal.
Hopkins has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Davidson College. He earned a master’s degree in business administration as well as a juris doctor degree from Villanova University, where he graduated with honors. He also holds a master of laws degree from Temple University and has earned the Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) and Retirement Certified Professional® (RICP®) financial planning designations from The American College.
