DAYTON, Ohio, May 7, 2013 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — When the Dayton area’s leading industrial flooring finisher, Summit Industrial Flooring, got wind of the plan for the Heidelberg Distributing Company’s move of its Dayton operations to the former Cooper Tire & Rubber Company facility in Moraine, Summit knew their expertise would be needed.
Summit Industrial’s experience of more than two decades of installing and refinishing industrial and commercial floors indicated that converting from a tire production facility to a beverage distribution and warehouse center meant that the floors would be in need to a major overhaul.
“The Cooper Tire facility is an older building, with a lot of cracks, divots and spalls,” said Keith Powell, vice-president of Summit Industrial Flooring. “We went in and evaluated the use case and the existing structure and recommended a polished concrete solution.”
Summit’s trained installers repaired the imperfections prior to polishing. The polishing process itself has dedicated an average of eight grinders working simultaneously to give new life to more than a half million square feet of old concrete.
Rehabilitating and repurposing a facility such as this required investment and dedication from all parties involved in this project. “We really appreciate the trust and confidence that Vail Miller Jr. (CEO/COO of Heidelberg Distributing Company) placed in us on this great project,” shares Powell.
“We also have a great working relationship with Miller-Valentine,” Powell said, “and we had installed polished concrete at Heidelberg’s old facility, so all the parties knew what Summit could do with the floor.” Miller-Valentine is the general contractor on the project.
“Plus, the new Heidelberg facility is in our neighborhood,” Powell added, noting that both Heidelberg and Summit Industrial are located on Dryden Road.
Converting a facility’s use requires more than changing the sign on the outside, Powell explained. “Going from tire manufacturing to beverage distribution is a major change,” Powell said. “Any time we are working with consumables, the installation demands a floor that is durable, easy to clean and maintain, and that looks good. Polished concrete was a perfect choice for this project.”
“We look forward to the opening,” Powell said. “We will be there to lift a cold one to toast this great rehab project, and we will be standing on the best floor for the job.”
