EXTON, Penn. – June 14 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Newcomen Society (www.newcomen.org) and the Harvard Business School recently awarded Michelle Craig McDonald with the prestigious Harvard-Newcomen Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Business History.

Since 1949, the Harvard-Newcomen Fellowship has been given annually to promising young scholars in the field of business history. The fellowship recipient is selected by the business history faculty at Harvard after a competitive review of applications submitted by candidates from a number of universities.

McDonald, who recently received her Ph.D. in history from the University of Michigan, joins past fellows who now rank among the world’s leading business historians. Past fellowship recipients include Louis Galambos, Professor of History and Editor of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Papers at the Johns Hopkins University; David C. Mowery, Director of the Ph.D. Program at the Haas School of Business at the U.C. Berkeley; and Tony Freyer, Professor of Law at the University of Alabama.

The fellowship, valued at approximately $60,000, gives McDonald the opportunity to spend a year in residence at the Harvard Business School where she will work with the business history faculty and conduct research in the Baker Library. She will also be able to participate in the school’s business history courses, seminars, and case development activities. During her year at Harvard, McDonald expects to complete her book titled “From Cultivation to Cup: Caribbean Coffee and North America’s Economy, 1765-1805.”

The Newcomen Society supports this postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard Business School as part of a comprehensive program to promote research and teaching in business history in American colleges and universities.
