RALEIGH, N.C., May 6, 2014 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE)) — Triangle Parenting Solutions today announced that it has started a new class that will give divorced parents a way to reduce the negative effects the divorce has on their children.

“Co-parenting after a divorce is not an instinctual skill so when parents separate or divorce children often suffer tremendously,” said Jennifer Viemont, LCSW and president of Triangle Parenting Solutions.

According to a recent study by the National Center for Health Statistics, 60 percent of marriages for couples between the ages of 20 and 25 end in divorce. In addition, 50 percent of all marriages in which the brides are 25 or older result in a failed marriage.

Viemont explained that, though she is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, her four-week parenting course entitled: Parenting through Divorce: Reducing the Negative Effects on Your Children is not therapy.

“The class has a skill based and solution focused curriculum. Since the sessions are private, we are able to individualize and apply the content to the parents’ specific situation,” Viemont said.

The availability of the new class for divorced parents to help with co-parenting issues could have perfect timing.

According to the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, teenage children of divorce are three times more likely to need psychological help within a given year.

In addition, the study concluded, children from divorced homes have more psychological problems, than children from which one of the parents has died. This is an indication that the transitions involved with divorce and solving co-parenting issues should not only be a concern, but also addressed with professional help.

Parenting through Divorce: Reducing the Negative Effects on Your Children:

Divorce, Viemont noted, enables parents to develop a completely new skill set for parenting. Viemont added that even when only one parent takes the course the children still benefit, however the most ideal situation involves both parents taking it. As a way to encourage both parents learning these skills, Viemont offers a complimentary fifth session that is complimentary when both parents sign up for the four individual class session.

As to what makes this class different from everything else on the market, Viemont pointed out that there are few if any other resources that are useful to separated parents of varying conflict levels and that is also customized to their individual circumstances.

“Sometimes people can find group classes for co-parenting, but that is not customized like mine is,” Viemont said. “My background in mental health and coaching enable me to help parents focus on the actions they can take to help their children.”

Parents who enroll into the class will become trained on topics, which include: Keeping the kids out of the middle; Handling transitions; Creating two homes; Realigning your relationship; Setting boundaries; Conflict resolution, and Anger management.

Class sessions are held at Triangle Parenting Solutions’ Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or Cary offices or through video conference. The fee for the course is $375.
