THE NHL DOMINATOR RETIRES
DETROIT, MI (HockeyTown USA) -- (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE via PRNetwire) -- June 25, 2002 -- Dominik Hasek, arguably the best goaltender in the history of the NHL, announced today that he is retiring from professional hockey.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Detroit Red Wings' 2002 Stanley Cup victory and amid renewed contract talks and speculation about whether The Dominator was going to play another season.
"This has been a very difficult decision for me to make. Hockey has been a big part of my life. And the fans and the Red Wings organization have been so great, but it's time for me to move on to other things."
Hasek was reportedly being offered from between 8 to 10 million US to play another season with the Wings.
Hasek plans to spend more time with his family in the Czech Republic and pursue other interests, including working with kids' charities and building his sports apparel company, Dominator Clothing. The company, Hasek's newest passion, has been successfully marketing and selling sports and leisurewear in Europe for the past three years.
"I'm very pleased with the success that Dominator has seen so far in Europe," says Hasek. "We are expanding into new regions including North America and I want to focus my attentions on that. My goal is to build Dominator into a strong company that will help build better communities for kids."
Dominator Clothing plans on premiering its website in September, along with regional clothing launches in North America beginning in the fall of 2002. People wanting to get an early glimpse of the clothing line can go to www.dominatorclothing.com.
"Having Dominik debut his clothing line now is a great opportunity for us to showcase Czech designer fashions to sports and leisurewear consumers in North America," says Dale Johnson, spokesman for Dominator Clothing North America. "People love these clothes at first sight ~and first wear. As you might expect from someone like Dominik, the quality is exceptional."
Quality is certainly a fitting word to describe the man who earned the title of The Dominator. His retirement marks the end of one of the greatest careers in the history of hockey.
