New Weapon in the War on Terrorism from FP Technologies Protects New York City Buildings from Bio-Weapons
NEW YORK, NY - Aug. 5, 2004 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- Financial institutions, key
government buildings and hospitals are using a new technology for protection
against terrorists using biological weapons. The VIGILAIR technology from FP Technologies, Inc. (www.vigilairsystems.com) safeguards against
attacks in which biological agents, such as anthrax, are released inside or near
a building.
"Our technology stops and kills anthrax before it can spread
throughout a building's ventilation system," says Tim Leach, CEO of FP
Technologies, the company that engineers the
VIGILAIR bio-defense systems. "In light of the recent elevated terror risk,
I am proud that VIGILAIR is protecting several high profile buildings in the
Manhattan area."
The U.S. Federal government has warned that the ventilation systems of buildings
are an ideal target for bio-terrorism. A small amount of anthrax introduced
into ground level air intakes could quickly be dispersed throughout a building
exposing thousands of occupants to the deadly pathogen.
How do the systems work?
VIGILAIR systems use a wavelength of Ultra Violet (UV) light that acts as a
powerful germicide. UV lights, filtration and reflective materials are
configured inside a buildings Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
system to purify air as it circulates through the system. When engineered
properly, radiation produced by the UV lights kills microorganisms such as
spores, bacteria and viruses.
Systems are designed for installation in any size air handler unit and provide
non-obtrusive protection 24 hours a day.
Who uses the bio-defense systems?
For security reasons, FP Technologies has agreed to not divulge specific
facilities using VIGILAIR systems. It is accurate to say that financial
institutions and strategically important government buildings in New York use
the systems to safeguard their HVAC. The system has also been installed in
several hospitals designated as regional Emergency Response disaster centers.
Are bio-weapons a threat?
Yes. Many buildings take fresh air into their HVAC system via unprotected vents
at street level. A single cupful of anthrax dumped into an air intake could
potentially infect more than a thousand people inside the building.
