New Book On Charter Schools Gives Insight On Creating A Successful Educational Learning Environment Using The Montessori Theory, Brain Research, And Community Empowerment
Article Editor: Christopher Laird Simmons
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - November 9, 2004 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- Author, Steve P. Jefferson, Ed.D. announced the release of his book "Charter Schools: A Descriptive Study of Empowerment within the Operation of Charter Schools" (ISBN 1-58112-218-7), a book that highlights the key variables which can promote successful public schools.
WestEd (2003), a nonprofit research, development, and service agency conducted a two-year study on the governance issues within the second largest school district in the nation, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The final report entitled, "Transforming Los Angeles Schools: An Evaluation of the Los Angeles Unified School District" revealed that structural barriers in governance inhibited educational reform from taking hold in the district. These findings were attributed to the top-down bureaucratic policies that governed the school district. As a result, WestEd recommended LAUSD develop stronger community support networks and decentralized decision making. These recommendations were expected to take place over an eight-to-ten-year period (WestEd 2003).
Dr. Jefferson has just released a new book on charter schools that addresses many of these same issues. His research has suggested that community empowerment, high expectations, the Montessori curriculum, brain research and shared vision are key variables that can improve education despite the educational environment.
This book takes an in-depth look at two charter schools, one in a rural community and the other in an urban community and compares the variables which made both schools successful. In addition, this book outlines the vital variables needed to establish a school that meets the educational needs of today's students.
"Developing empowerment within most school districts is one of the vital keys to promoting a positive learning environment for all children," says the book's author, veteran educator Steve P. Jefferson.
