Not So Gentle GIANT - Entertainment Magazine Teams with themechanism, llc, for Huge Online Impact
Article Editor: Christopher Simmons
NEW YORK, NY - December 1, 2004 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- When newly launched men's entertainment magazine, GIANT, was looking for a design firm who could capture the essence of their print publication online, they turned to themechanism. "themechanism's forward-thinking design sense and technical knowledge, combined with their appreciation of pop-culture and irreverent humor made them the perfect choice," said Jamie Hooper, President and Publisher, GIANT Magazine.
GIANT and themechanism worked collaboratively to create an online vehicle that is inseparable from the print publication.
"Our goal was to create a GIANT experience, rather than just a companion piece," said Dave Fletcher, Founding Partner and Creative Director of themechanism. The result is a virtual smorgasbord for their entertainment-obsessed readers. Site features include a jukebox, courtesy of Groundswell Music, showcasing independent music artists.
"This is an amazing opportunity for unsigned bands to receive national exposure and for site visitors to be the first on their block to discover emerging artists," said Fletcher. The non-linear content navigation encourages visitors to explore the site through multiple avenues. Unique and sometimes irreverent links are dispersed throughout the site, revealing interesting entertainment tidbits, while also increasing the length of visitors' stay. Visitors to the site also get the opportunity to participate in exclusive GIANT sponsored contests and promotions.
The new site is powered by a unique XML-driven Macromedia Flash-based system that collectively informs the tiered navigational structure, allowing for easy bi-monthly updates to the color palette, navigation icons and text as well as news and music.
The publication, which was recently ranked as one of Fast Company Magazine's "101 Ideas, People and Trends that will Change the Way We Work and Live in 2005," has seen a jump in subscribers and interest since going live with the site.
"A project's ultimate success comes from believing in the client and the work," said Anthony Shafto, Partner, themechanism. "themechanism shares GIANT's vision of a total pop culture experience, and that includes continuing to work with them on groundbreaking site additions. GIANT subscribers will experience a living manifestation of the printed material online as well as obtain additional goodies that might not fit in the newsstand issue."
"We've only begun to touch on what is ultimately possible in this arena. We're certainly not saying goodbye to the tactile and visual experience of print," added Fletcher. "We're just letting some more senses in on the fun."
