WILLIAM "BILL" POPIN APPOINTED AS CHAIRMAN OF THE UNITED STATES PHARMACOPEIA (USP) ADVISORY PANEL ON DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

Salt Lake City, Utah -- (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE via PRNetwire) -- September 25, 2002 -- The newly formed USP Advisory Panel on Dietary Supplements will be charged with providing information and recommendations on policy to the Expert Committee on Dietary Supplements-Botanicals.

The Advisory Panel on Botanicals is being formed to address issues relating to botanicals for which public standards have either been established or under development that are not covered currently by the Pharmacopeia.

Historically many of the issues that will be considered by the new panel including commercial sources, cultivation, harvesting, botanical identification, and establishment of reference standards were outside the scope of the Pharmacopeia. However with the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, the marketplace has changed dramatically and botanical preparations are widely promoted and marketed under the provisions of the DSHEA as dietary supplements.
