OHIO CLERGY TO MAKE 'LAST STAND FOR THE TEN COMMANDMENTS' - CIVIL DISOBEIENCE
CONTEMPLATED
CINCINNATI, OH - June 5, 2003 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- A group of Ohio clergy will
stage a dramatic "Last Stand" that may include civil disobedience before a
federal court order to remove four monuments of the Ten Commandments is carried
out in rural Adams County on June 9. The event is the culmination of five years
of legal battles over stone sculptures of the Ten Commandments that stand in
front of four public schools. Several ministers plan to interpose themselves
between a crane and the 850-pound objects.
The Reverend Dr. Kenneth Johnson, a Methodist minister who has led the Adams
County for the Ten Commandments Committee (www.4the10.net), said he expects
about 1000 people to come out in support of the Commandments on the day they are
to be removed.
He anticipates most will be peaceful and cooperative with police,
but that some have said they will risk arrest to protect the displays. A farmer
has threatened to drive a huge tractor onto school property to defend the
monuments.
